RV steps aren’t just a convenient thing to have on hand when you embark on a camping or traveling journey. They should be considered a must-have. Just think of how often you step in and out of your RV while traveling?!
A sturdy, high-quality set of stairs or steps can make your RV significantly more functional and comfortable. Just as well, those with disabilities need excellent steps with railings to make getting in and out of the RV as smooth as possible. Nobody wants to trip and fall flat when exiting their RV… am I right?
In this article, I’ve compiled what I think are the 10 best RV steps and stairs for you to consider. I’ve weighed a number of factors to ensure these steps were worth a purchase – from overall quality to size to additional features.
1. Quick Products JQ-S150
If you’re not interested in permanently attaching a set of RV steps to your RV, you’re in luck. There are many options available for portable RV steps, and this product from Quick Products is by far my favorite!
This platform step is extremely durable, made of excellent high-quality steel, and can handle up to 300 pounds. Yep, you heard right. 300 pounds!
Setup is very intuitive and it can be easily folded up and stowed away. While it’s notably heavier than other portable steps, that weight adds some additional stability and security and is, in my opinion, worth it.
- It’s ridiculously durable, and you can pretty much throw anything at it
- It folds and takes up almost no space
- There’s a non-slip surface that makes it very grippy – just like a skateboard!
- The rubbery soles might fall off with extensive use… quite annoying
2. Buyers Products RV Steps
Looking for something as simple as it gets? Or do you plan on traveling to a very hot climate with direct sunlight that can turn exposed metal into a branding stick?
If so, this one-piece plastic RV step from Buyers Products could be a great solution to your problem. It’s ridiculously lightweight, strong, durable, and easy to move around. Pretty much a nobrainer, right?
Also, you won’t have to worry about brushing your exposed leg against these steps and getting a nice burn. Made from thick polymer, these steps don’t get very hot. The only issue is the occasional wobbliness when placed on an uneven surface.
- It’s portable and extremely lightweight… it even has a handle
- Cheaper than most RV steps made of aluminum
- Doesn’t get too hot in the sun if you don’t have any shoes on
- It can be a tad wobbly if you’re camping on uneven surfaces
- It takes up a lot of space when it’s not being used
3. Kwikee 32 Series
Another popular brand, Kwikee’s RV steps are foldable and offer dependable nonslip tread. If you’re looking for a set of RV steps that folds automatically, this could be worth looking into.
The Kwikee RV steps have electrical components that allow the stairs to automatically unfold when your RV door is open.
One of the downsides of purchasing these steps is the rather complex installation, but if you’re willing to put a few hours into the installation, they’re the perfect set of stairs for your next RV trip. Guaranteed!
They’re also quite durable with solid steel rods and stainless steel components. On Amazon’s website, it’s claimed that they can handle up to 300 lbs.
But they come in at a hefty price compared to some of the other RV steps that made this list – at a staggering $500. But you get what you pay for.
- Automatically unfolds when opening and closing the door
- Extremely sturdy and covered in grip tape for increased safety
- Might be a tad complicated to install
- Comes in at a hefty price point
4. Lippert Solid Step Double
These steps from the popular RV brand Lippert are unique in that they are attachable, but don’t require secondary (and complicated) electrical wiring in order to install them.
I’d recommend manual attachable RV entry steps if you don’t want to deal with the risky electrical components involved in the installation process and don’t mind having to physically push the stairs down when exiting your RV.
The Solid Step Double from Lippert is extremely easy to install and has an excellent weight capacity of 400 pounds. Just as well, the adjustable extensions of this product are very convenient and add to the overall stability.
- Very sturdy and can handle up to 400 pounds!
- Height can be adjusted by sliding out the legs of the steps
- Not too expensive (~$300) considering the overall quality of the product
- Might’ve been cool with a little more grip tape on the steps
There’s really not a lot of downsides with the Lippert. It’s a great set of steps for people who’d pay a little extra for great quality.
5. Ollieroo Step Stool
This popular brand makes one of the most common portable RV platforms you’ll find. This RV step platform is far from luxurious, but it gets the job done in most circumstances.
If your RV threshold is not particularly high, the modest 7-inch height of these RV steps are excellent. You can even hold the legs into the platform and easily travel with it via the small carrying handle on the side of the product.
It’s lightweight, portable, and very basic. I’d go for this product for smaller RVs and those who don’t want to deal with heavy portable stairs.
- Takes just about 6 seconds to fold out and place it on the ground
- The entire top is covered in a super grippy material
- Weighs just 4 lbs – approximately the same as a big bottle of ketchup
- It’s really not ideal for uneven surfaces
- Although it can take 330 lbs it can be a bit wobbly
So if you’re looking for a cheap RV step that’ll do the job, then you might want to take a second look at the Ollieroo Step Stool on Amazon.
6. Stromberg Carlson SMFP-3100
One of Stromberg’s many great products, this set of attachable manual RV steps is very affordable and very easy to install.
With a flexible three-step design, these steps are perfect for tall RVs or for travelers who use items like walkers.
The Stromberg Carlson Manual RV steps are also very versatile and designed to fit most RVs, making it an excellent budget-friendly solution. The only real downside to this product is that the non-slip grip material on the steps themselves is very small and only covers a small portion of the steps, which can be a safety issue.
- Very easy to install with the included screws
- Made in America (if you’re like me and love American made stuff)
- Could’ve used a little more grip tape on the steps for the winters
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly set of steps that’re permanently attached to your RV, then look no further than the Stromberg Carlson SMFP-3100s.
If you’ve got a large party on your hands, a high weight capacity is key in finding the best portable RV steps.
This single-step platform from Camco can hold up to a whopping 1,000 pounds, so you can also carry heavy items in and out of your RV without worrying about your platform breaking underneath you.
Even though these steps have a very high weight capacity, you might be shocked by how lightweight the actual product is. This is excellent, making it easy to transport and store away when not being used.
- Can handle a very high weight capacity
- The legs can be adjusted in height to fit your RV
- Very, very, very affordable compared to other steps
- There’s really no cons about these steps… they’re great!
So if you’re looking for a set of steps that’re super cheap and will last you a lifetime, then you might want to take a look at the Camco Platform Step.
Features to look for when buying RV steps
When looking to buy your first set of RV steps, you’re probably just looking for a set of steps that work. And I’m totally with you on that one. However, there are a few things you might want to consider:
Portable vs attached
Portable RV steps are simply placed in front of the RV’s threshold and can easily be moved if not used. Attached RV steps are physically attached to the RV itself, making them semi- or fully permanent fixtures. The installation for such steps can be a pain, especially if there’s an electrical component involved. However, attached RV steps are much more stable but usually a tad more expensive.
Metal vs plastic
High-quality RV steps are often made from stainless steel, which can provide a higher weight limit and added stability and durability. Plastic steps won’t last as long, but they are cheaper, lighter, and easier to maneuver.
Height and width
Before you start shopping for a set of RV steps, it is vital that you measure the width of your RV’s exit door and the height between the bottom lip of the threshold and the ground. Many RV steps have adjustable heights but do not have adjustable widths.
You can easily pay $100-200 for a set of steps, particularly if they are attachable and feature an electric component. If you are in need of a cheap and quick solution, many portable steps and platforms are available for under $100.
Final thoughts on RV steps
That wraps up the entire list of RV steps. When I first started looking for a better entrance solution for my RV, I went over a bunch of options.
But the easiest and, let’s face it, most cost effective solution in the long run is definitely to get your hands on a set of RV steps.
I wish you the best of luck finding the right steps for your camper! 🙂
